Clare Nowland dies in hospital; Officer charged with assault

NSW Police have confirmed the passing of great grandmother, Clare Nowland, in Cooma District Hospital overnight (Wednesday May 24).

In a statement from NSW Police, they said the 95-year-old “passed away peacefully” last night.

“Mrs Nowland passed away peacefully in hospital just after 7pm, surrounded by family and loved ones who have requested privacy during this sad and difficult time,” the statement read.

“Our thoughts and condolences remain with those who were lucky enough to know, love, and be loved by Mrs Nowland during a life she led hallmarked by family, kindness and community.”

It comes one week after the great grandmother was tasered by a Monaro District Police officer at Yallambee Lodge aged care home after she was found holding a steak knife.

The officer, who has been stood down with pay and has now been charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and common assault.

The 33-year-old officer with 12 years experience in the force, is due to face Cooma Local Court on July 5.

Investigations into the critical incident continue.
