The Bega ANZ is set to close it’s doors for good later this year.

The bank has contacted customers to inform them of the upcoming closure, citing that transactions have halved over the last five years at the Bega Branch.

“93 per cent of customers have not have not transacted in this branch at 12 times or more in the past year,” the spokesperson said.

“After careful consideration of a range of factors, the business has decided to permanently close the Bega branch.”

The bank will cease operation from 4pm on Wednesday 9th of October 2024.

The ANZ ATM on Carp Street will remain, but the nearest ANZ branch will be 145 kilometres away, in Batemans Bay, with the next closest branches in Canberra and Bairnsdale.

If they are not they already, customers are being advised to set up and use ANZ Internet banking or download the ANZ App to pay bills, transfer money, view account statements and report cards as lost or stolen.

The news comes a month after the National Australia Bank (NAB)announced it would be closing it’s Moruya branch permanently from Wednesday the 12th of June 2024.

One member of the Bega community who wishes to remain anonymous said the closure will have a big impact on the community.

“That’s something Bega has always had, all of the big banks in town, so it will be a big loss.”
