A lot of State Government officials have descended on the Cuttagee Bridge this week to assess the condition of the historic crossing.

The move comes as Bega Valley Shire Council proceed with detailed design work for a new two lane concrete and steel version to replace the much loved timber structure.

Labor Councillor Helen O’Neill said locals will be very keen to hear what they found.

“If you have been down there you would have noticed a number of State Government trucks there,” she said.

“They put a boat in so they can look under the bridge as well so I’ll be very interested in finding out about that assessment of the state of the bridge.”

Bega Valley Shire Council confirmed this week they are proceeding with a detailed design of a replacement for the historic timber Cuttagee Bridge.

In response to a question on notice from Councillor O’Neill, staff also advised they are preparing a grant application to source the $15-million funding shortfall and a review of environmental factors will now also be prepared.

“It will include what happens to the southern car park with a much wider bridge and a company called NGH is going to prepare the statement on the heritage impact.

“I’m still getting a lot of concern from local residents from people in the town about what’s happening so I’d imagine there will be a great deal of interest in that review of environmental factors.”
