New bridges aid ‘safety, community connections’

A $13m bridge project designed to improve safety and help strengthen community connections in the Bega Valley, is now complete.

Six aging timber structures across the shire have been replaced with modern bridges that will have longer lifespans and help lower maintenance costs, according to the Bega Valley Shire.

The replacement program was funded through the NSW government’s Fixing Country Bridges program.

Bega Valley Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said the completion of the construction program would strengthen the long-term resilience of the region’s bridge network.

“Beyond the engineering, this program is an investment in safety, connection, and the long-term strength of our communities,” he said.

“It’s important to highlight, that over the past five years and with significant NSW Government support, Council has been able to upgrade 31 of our 376 bridges and major culvert structures across the shire.”

The NSW government said the old bridges had come to the end of their serviceable life.

Bega MP Dr Michael Holland said the upgrades demonstrate how targeted government investment keeps regional communities safe and connected.

“These new, resilient structures will ensure reliable access for residents, farmers, school buses and emergency services, even in periods of heavy rain and flooding,” Mr Holland said.

“By partnering with Bega Valley Shire Council, we are strengthening local infrastructure, supporting our communities, and making sure people can travel safely and reliably every day.”
