Moruya recognises dedication of volunteers in Australia Day Awards

A man who has dedicated over three decades of volunteering to surf life saving was been named Moruya’s Citizen of the Year.

Michael (Mike) Hallahan was presented with the award at an Australia Day ceremony in the town this morning by Deputy Mayor Anthony Mayne.

He has been involved with training local kids for more than 30 years through Nippers and Nippers for the Disabled.

The Volunteer of the Year Award recipient this year is Andrew Nader.

Andrew has been volunteering with the RSL for half of his 37 years so far. He also gives up his time for the annual Moruya Ag Show and Moruya Rodeo.

The Moruya Young Citizen of the Year award was shared this year with an unintentional focus on sport.

Local South Coast Marlins Junior Rugby League Club players Lila Weyman, Harper Lascock and Maya Colburn were named joint winners with the u defeated Moruya Tuross Under 16 boys rugby league team.

South Sydney Rabbitohs tragic Cliff Southcombe was also recognised for his must-see Christmas lights display.

Cliff has been lighting up Bengalia Street for more than 25 years, much to the delights of local residents, young and old.

The event was organised by a small group of dedicated volunteers and included a free BBQ breakfast.
