Wildlife group, WIRES and Police were called to a Batemans Bay suburb on Sunday March 12 where they found several kangaroos with horrific injuries.
South Coast Police are investigating after Long Beach residents heard noises and discovered burnouts on Blairs Road.
Police have said initial inquiries suggested the kangaroos were killed between 6.30pm and 10pm that night.
Local residents reached out to WIRES (The NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service) around 10:30pm, who sent a member down to Long Beach to investigate, and contacted police.
The volunteer found an adult female kangaroo that had a very young joey in its pouch, both were deceased. They then discovered four more kangaroos in the same area, that had severe injuries including broken legs, backs and smashed skulls.
All kangaroos that were found alive, were later ethunaised.
WIRES Mid South Coast Branch chair, Janelle Renes, told East Coast Radio, it was heartbreaking that someone could commit such an act.
“On arrival we had mixed emotions, we were quite confused, disbelieving, sad and angry,” Renes said.
“We do everything that we can to save our precious wildlife and then something like this happens and it really does break out hearts,” she said.
“All (that were still alive) had significant injuries and had to be ethunaised.”

It’s not the first time incident of this nature in Batemans Bay, after an attack in October 2021 left 14 kangaroos deceased in Maloneys Beach and Long Beach.
Two 17-year-old boys were later charged by police for recklessly beat and kills animal.
