Boydtown Shipyard is inviting the Sapphire Coast community to discuss the future use of a student-built, timber whale boat which is nearing its completion.

Students at Eden Marine High School have been building the replica whale boat for the past year after Boydtown Shipyard entered into a sponsorship arrangement with Eden Marine High in 2021 to begin building a wooden boat at the school.

Secretary and treasurer of the Boydtown Shipyard, Peter Ayling, said the objective is to teach boat building skills and ultimately provide boats that can be rowed by students or community members in rowing competitions in an international rowing class.

“The boat is built to an international design and can be raced against similar boats in regattas across the country.”

The project is in conjunction with the Boydtown Shipyard, who are hosting a meeting at Eden Yacht Club at Quarantine Bay from 2.30pm today (Tuesday 23rd) to discuss the future use of the boat.

The initial plan is to store it at the Eden Yacht Club with students having access during school days and the wider community on weekends.

There are also plans to potentially revive a local regatta in Eden which hasn’t been done since 1935.
