Bermagui residents are asking for an explanation on how a massive mud sludge has been allowed to run off from a local building site into the harbour.

We’ve been told the dirt and clay has come from a construction site and has resulted in the nearby golf course and mangroves also being covered.

Concerned resident and former CEO of Transparency International Serena Lillywhite said it’s really spreading right through into the wetlands, rivers, out to sea, through the mangroves with everything from a light coffee colour to right to through to a dark chocolate colour.

“This is like nothing the residents of Bermagui have seen before,” she said.

“The developer needs to put in place a series of sediment control measures. In fact their own management plan states very clearly they have to install a sediment control structure and that needs to be done before the commencement of any digging works.”

We reached out to the EPA yesterday afternoon. They say it’s a matter for Bega Valley Shire Council to investigate.

We subsequently asked the Bega Valley Shire Council a series of questions on this issue and are waiting for a response.

“I think the first step for the council is to investigate what happened. Ask questions of the developer and their contractors, ask for clear evidence that they have put in place the sediment control structures prior to commencement of any works,” she said.
