Bega bank branch shut by police after alleged armed hold up

Police are on scene at the Commonwealth Bank branch in Bega after an alleged armed hold up.


Customers attempting to enter the Carp Street building this afternoon were reportedly told by police they were unable to access the branch and should use online banking instead.

“About 3.10pm today (Friday 9 October 2026), officers from the South Coast Police District attended a bank on Carp Street, Bega, following reports of a man armed with a knife.,” a statement from police reads.

“A man has been arrested after a bank employee was allegedly threatened in the states south,” Detective Inspector Justin Marks said.

“When officers entered the bank, the man allegedly held a knife to the throat of a 58-year-old female staff member and a number of threats were made,” Detective Inspector Marks said.

“After a brief verbal interaction between the man and police, officers deployed a Taser to affect the man’s arrest.

The 38-year-old man was taken to Bega Police Station.

There were no reports of injuries and the knife was seized.

“Inquiries into the incident are continuing.”

The man is expected to face the online Bail Review Court tomorrow.

The Commonwealth Bank has thanked police for their quick response.

“We are aware of an incident at our Bega branch this afternoon. Emergency services have attended the scene,” a spokesperson said.

“Our first priority is the safety of our employees, customers and members of public.

“No staff or customers were injured as a result of the incident.”
