A car with ammunition on board has gone up in flames on the Far South Coast, spraying bullets in every direction.
Wyndham local, Hanna Marshall, was one of the first to drive past the scene on Myrtle Mountain Road between Wyndham and Candelo in the Bega Valley just after 7:15am on Monday (June 24).
“I came around the corner and found a giant ball of flames and it took me a second to realise that it was actually a car that was on fire,” Mrs Marshall said
“The fire was well underway with every window engulfed with flames and I was a bit concerned at first as I couldn’t see anybody around and I took my phone out, ready to call emergency services when I drove up a bit further and saw there was a man there with a dog,” she explained.
“I pulled up and asked if he needed a hand and to see if he was okay and yeah, I could hear popping sounds, and that’s when he told me that his car was also filled with ammunition.
“He said emergency services were on the way, and just to keep clear of the area, as it had live ammo in the car which was exploding.”
Firefighters rushed to the scene, near Myrtle Mountain Lookout to extinguish the car.
The NSW Rural Fire Service arrived just after 730am to observed a car fully involved in fire.
Crews kept their distance and approached with caution after the owner advised them most of the ammo had likely “gone off”.
The blaze was quickly extinguished, with no problems encountered.
Upon talking to the car owner, an RFS Spokesperson said the driver observed smoke from the dashboard of the car, so he pulled over before the vehicle caught fire.
“Thankfully no one was hurt and it was all brought under control,” Mrs Marshall said.
