How to spot misinformation and find facts

What is misinformation? It’s a catch-all word that includes any type of manipulated, misleading, disceptive or inaccurate published information. Disinformation describes content that is deliberately designed to deceive. A lot of misinformation is spread without people realising it’s wrong. Misinformation is a big problem for society.

Through this simple, research-backed short course, learn: how to identify different online media and information; think critically; verify and fact check; understand social media algorithms and AI; and recognise bias.

At the end of this two-hour course, you’ll be able to:

·         Think carefully about the information and media you see (especially online)

·         Find out how to verify information and media

·         Learn how social media algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) work

·         Understand different viewpoints when looking at media.

Using the Stay Smart Online Training toolkit developed by the University of Canberra News and Media Research Centre you’ll increase your media literacy skills.
