The middle of the year usually brings a bit of a lull in major retail releases, but subscription services are more than happy to pick up the slack. This month, the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue is getting an absolute injection of adrenaline, fantasy, and oddly therapeutic agricultural work.
Whether you want to wield the apocalyptic powers of a dark god or just figure out how to efficiently harvest spinach in East Asia, there is something hitting the service to occupy your winter evenings. Let’s dive into what you will be downloading this month.
The Big Hitters: Revenge and Blue Blurs
First out of the gate is Final Fantasy XVI. If you skipped this at launch because you were waiting for a price drop, your patience has officially paid off.
- The Synopsis: The game takes us to Valisthea, a gritty dark fantasy realm being slowly consumed by a mysterious blight. You step into the boots of Clive Rosfield, a warrior on a classic, blood-soaked quest for vengeance following a family tragedy.
- The Mechanics: This isn’t the turn-based strategy of your childhood. It is a full-blown, flashy action game. The combat flows beautifully, allowing you to chain together magical abilities derived from massive elemental beasts called Eikons. The cinematic boss battles are spectacular, though purists might find the role-playing mechanics a bit thin on the ground compared to older entries.
If you prefer your action with a side of nineties nostalgia, Sonic X Shadow Generations is also making an appearance.
- The Synopsis: This package features a standalone campaign starring Shadow the Hedgehog as he confronts his old nemesis, Black Doom, alongside a comprehensive remaster of the original Sonic Generations.
- The Mechanics: Expect high-speed platforming that switches effortlessly between traditional 2D side-scrolling and modern 3D camera angles. While Sonic handles the classic speed runs, Shadow brings a darker, more aggressive style with unique time-bending powers. The camera can occasionally struggle to keep up with the breakneck pace, but the sheer momentum makes it incredibly satisfying.
Gritty Realism and Fractured Timelines
For the history buffs, Kingdom Come: Deliverance arrives with a shiny current-gen upgrade for the PlayStation 5.
- The Synopsis: Set in medieval Bohemia, you play as Henry, a humble blacksmith’s son caught in the middle of a brutal civil war. Your village is destroyed, your family is gone, and you are starting from absolute zero.
- The Mechanics: This game respects your intelligence and your time, sometimes to a fault. The combat is hyper-realistic, directional, and incredibly punishing early on. You actually have to learn how to hold a sword properly. The upgraded version boasts gorgeous 4K resolution and smoother framerates, making the mud and blood of the medieval landscape look stunning. If you hate survival mechanics and complex inventory menus, it might irritate you, but the depth on offer is unmatched.
If you prefer narrative drama over swordplay, Life is Strange: Double Exposure brings back original protagonist Max Caulfield.
- The Synopsis: Max discovers her new best friend murdered in the snow. Attempting to rewind time to save her, Max accidentally splits reality, opening a doorway to a parallel timeline where her friend is still alive but still very much in danger.
- The Mechanics: The core gameplay focuses on exploration, dialogue choices, and puzzle-solving across two distinct versions of reality. Your decisions genuinely alter the narrative path. It moves at a deliberate pace, so do not look for high-octane thrills her, it is a supernatural detective story through and through.
Indie Gems and Cult Classics
Rounding out the Extra tier are three very distinct flavours:
Farming Simulator 25: Introducing East Asian environments and rice farming. It is a deeply complex management tool that functions as the ultimate relaxation game.
Blades of Fire: A punishing, methodical action-adventure title from MercurySteam where you play as a warrior forging weapons out of stone-turning metal. The combat requires immense patience; a single mistimed swing means a swift trip back to the checkpoint.
Black Desert: A sprawling MMORPG with incredible character customization and action-focused guild warfare.
Finally, for the Deluxe subscribers, the PlayStation 2 cult classic Gitaroo Man makes its debut on modern hardware. This quirky rhythm game follows a young boy named U-1 who uses an instrument-turned-weapon to battle alien invaders. It is weird, vibrant, and features an unforgettable soundtrack that will test your reflexes.
The Verdict: Is It Highly Anticipated?
This is easily one of the strongest mid-year updates PlayStation Plus has delivered in quite some time. The inclusion of a mainline, current-generation Final Fantasy alongside a major Sonic release ensures that this update is well recieved.
The entire lineup drops on Tuesday, 16 June for subscribers in Australia.
- If you like: The Witcher 3 or Devil May Cry, you will love Final Fantasy XVI.
- If you like: Skyrim but wish it had no magic and more realistic sword fights, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is calling your name.
- If you like: Alan Wake or the original Life is Strange, Double Exposure is a must-play.
