A Batemans Bay man has been fined $500 after being found with a novelty lighter that looked like a 100-year-old handgun.

Peter Graeme White was convicted after pleading not guilty to possessing an unauthorised pistol and acquiring a firearm despite being subject to a prohibition order.

The court has been told the lighter clearly resembled a firearm despite it not having a trigger and still counted as a gun under NSW law.

The 55-year-old’s lawyer unsuccessfully argued anyone who picks it up would see it’s a lighter.
