From awards presentations, citizenship ceremonies, flag raising, brass bands to beach BBQ’s to shark sightings, duck and crab races and beautiful summer weather… Australia Day had it all here along the Far South Coast.
Local and visitors joined together and came out in force at various events from Batemans Bay to the border.
A large stingray event made an appearance at the big float off Mitchies Jetty in Merimbula.
Several locals picked up Honours in the annual National Australia Day Awards.
Tuross Head resident Dr Michelle Bruniges was awarded an AO after a distinguished career in education including as Director-General of Education in the ACT and Secretary of the Education Department’s for the NSW and Commonwealth Governments.
“I’m very humbled by the award. It’s a great honour and a privilege to receive such an honour,” Dr Bruniges said.
“I’ve been really fortunate and privileged to spend my whole career in the education sector,” she said.
Broulee’s Philip Armstrong has received the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the community through a range of organisations. This includes Meals on Wheels, Rotary, Campbell Page and Banksia Villages.
Bill Baker lives at Rosedale now and picked up an OAM for services to the Queanbeyan community and veteran Far South Coast RFS member David Philp awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal.
