The Australian rock icon, Col Joye, has passed away at 89 years old.
The ARIA Hall of Fame artist, Colin Frederick, known on stage as Col Joye, started his career in 1957 when he joined his brothers band the KJ Quintet in Sydney. As time went on the band eventually changed their name to “Col Joye and the Joy Boys”. He was the first Aussie pop artist to top the charts with his song “Bye Bye Baby” back in 1959, a song which had The Sapphires on the backing vocals.
Col Joye also worked as a successful talent scout in Sydney. He even crossed paths with a young and new group touring Queensland that were struggling to stay afloat and he took them on as a client. That band was called The Bee Gees. Since retiring Joye has donated over 1200 items to the National Film and Sound Archive.
