Plans to paint a tree blue at Pambula on Sunday to highlight suicide awareness has been temporarily called off after protests from nearby residents.
An old tree stump near the town’s Surf Life Saving Club was going to become the latest on the Far South Coast as part of the Blue Tree Project. The initiative received approval from Bega Valley Shire Council and numerous local stakeholders including the surf club and Pambula Panthers AFL club.
But organiser Colin Dunn from the Pambula Rotary Club said a local husband and wife turned up and objected to what was about to happen.
“The woman involved said I’m going to strap myself to the tree, you’ll have to paint over me to get it done,” he said.
The Rotary Club is now considering their options. The couple has since approached Colin and suggested another possible tree in the town that could be used instead.
