Far South Coast residents are being asked to look out for the Asian paper wasp, a pest with bright yellow markings, which affects local ecosystems and native wasps.

Science group Atlas of Life is asking people to record and map sightings on their website at atlasoflife.org.au

At the moment they've found a concentration around Bega, although there are reports of nests at Tathra and Pambula.

Residents are asked to be aware that there is a native wasp species is similar in markings but has less bright yellow markings.

Residents are asked to contact local pest controllers if they spot any nests on their property, or council if they see nests on public land.
