Monster South Coast paedophile sentenced in Bega today

Monster South Coast paedophile Maurice Van Ryn has had one year added to his non-parole period for newly- revealed child sex charges committed in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Van Ryn has been in prison since September 2014 and will now not not be eligible for parole until April 2029, when he is 74 years old.

A tenth victim came forward in March last year and today the Bega District Court heard the man, who is now an adult, but who was 14 and 15 year when assaulted by Van Ryn, is deeply affected by what happened to him.

Judge Sean Grant said the man has episodes of self harm, suffers from anxiety, flash-backs, relationship and trust issues and has suicidal thoughts.

Judge Sean Grant gave Van Ryn nine years in prison for the offences, however this sentence won't be served on top of his current sentence, but does stretch out the non-parole period for an extra year.

Outside the court the father of a number of the victims, who have previously come forward, says he believes there are still more victims in the community.
