The Bega Valley Shire Business Forum and the Merimbula Chamber of Commerce hosted their first Meet The Candidates event live on Zoom on Tuesday night (November 23) to hear from candidates for next week’s Bega Valley Council election.

All 18 candidates were invited to attend the meeting with only five taking part.

The format allowed each candidate the opportunity to speak for three minutes explaining their policies, followed by a Q&A.

Questions from voters ranged from the housing crisis, Merimbula's ocean outfall plans, to new public toilets in Cobargo, the upgrade of the Merimbula Skate Park, Cuttagee Bridge, support for the tourism sector and bushfire prevention/hazard reduction.

Merimbula Chamber of Commerce President Nigel Ayling said the event was a success.

"The event went well, everybody was really respectful and there was some good discussion," Mr Ayling said.

"We ended up with just five candidates in attendance, and we were only taking one from each party but would have been nice to have a few more," he said.
