By-election smear emails sent to AFP

The Australian Federal Police have been called in to investigate a smear campaign directed against Labor's candidate for the Eden Monaro by-election, Kristy McBain.

Earlier this week East Coast Radio broke the news the Australian Electoral Commmission was concerned about a series of emails being sent to people which make bizarre and false claims about Ms McBain. The emails also called on people to support the Liberal candidate.

The Australian Electoral Commission's electoral integrity network has now referred the emails on to the AFP.

At the beginning of the campaign Kristy McBain called for a clean and honest campaign.

Earlier this week she said the emails were not deterring her in her bid to win Eden Monaro, which looks like being an extremely close contest once again.

The Labor Party's National Secretary Paul Erickson meanwhile says the emails are malicious and any spread of disinformation is a threat to democracy.

Liberal candidate Fiona Kotvoys has condemned the emails.

The by election is on July 4.
