A small storm that swept over the South Coast on Wednesday, has seen a tree north of Bega catch fire after being struck by a bolt of lightning.

Brogo and Angledale Rural Fire Service (RFS) brigades attended the scene near Brogo dam on Warrigal Range Road just after 5pm on Wednesday (December 13).

Crews found a tree that was burning half way up, after being hit by around 30,000 amps.

Due to the height of the tree, a machine was called in to push it over to enable crews to fully extinguish the blaze to avoid it collapsing on nearby structures.

The RFS are warning locals to inspect their properties for possible trees alight after Wednesday’s and any future lightning storms.

“After lightning storms, please inspect your property for possible trees alight and report them to triple zero (000) if found,”a spokesperson from the Brogo RFS said.

“Special thanks to Bermagui Bobcat & Tipper Hire for supplying a machine so quickly.”
