South Coast Police are warning locals in the South East of a “Hi Mum” scam that has been doing the rounds.
According to police, perpetrators send a message, usually via WhatsApp or SMS, posing as a friend or family member who has either lost their phone or got a new number.
The scammers then claim to be locked out of their online banking system and ask the victim to send money.
Police urge anyone who receives suspicious messages from a number they don’t recognise to independently verify the contact and to never click links in messages they are unsure of or share personal information with someone they don’t know.
Report scams HERE via ACCC Scamwatch or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.
