Merimbula left in the dark

An unplanned power outage affected almost 2,500 people in Merimbula from 4:30pm on Tuesday (May 23).

Essential Energy crews got the power back up for just over 1,500 customers by 6:40pm with another 900 customers sorted within the next hour.

At the time of writing, there are still 62 people affected around Market and Short Streets – with power expected to be returned to them by 4pm today (Wednesday May 25) at the latest.

Essential Energy was alerted to the incident after receiving multiple calls of overhead powerlines arcing and sparking, as well as regular blackouts in and around the Merimbula township.

An Essential Energy spokesperson confirmed 2,447 customers saw the power go down yesterday after network protection equipment activated due to detecting a fault on the high voltage electricity network.

Staff re-routed supply and restored power to almost all customers within three hours.

Essential Energy has thanked it’s customers for their patience and understanding after the blackout.

Essential Energy is reminding customers to stay at least eight metres away from fallen powerlines and to report them or any other power issues to Essential Energy by phoning 13 20 80.
