A new coffee van has opened at Short Point Beach on the Sapphire Coast.
‘High Tide’ will provide coffee, snacks, cold drinks and ice cream in the recently council-improved carpark at Merimbula’s Short Point.
They will be open 7 days a week overlooking stunning views of Short Point Beach and Merimbula Back Lake from 630am until 3pm but will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
“Our new business is basically coffee and snacks served up at our beautiful environment at Short Point,” co-owner Lily McBain said.
“We hope to cater to locals and tourists alike with excellent coffee and basic but reliable refreshments.”
“Our hours may change slightly as we are just figuring things out this week.”
Lily’s partner Erin Tatnell will be running the van and making the coffee.
The name ‘High Tide’ well as being something you can witness from Short Point is a reference to the 1987 movie of the same name featuring Judy Davis and a young Claudia Karven, that was filmed around Merimbula and Eden.
“It is a nod to the movie,” McBain said.
“We wanted to think of a name that had a meaning behind it, something historically significant,” she continued.
“Our business partners run Mitchies Espresso Bar down at Mitchies Jetty and we like that it has always been ‘Mitchies’, with its own local history.
“We wanted something that people might have a chat about in reference to the history of the place I guess.
“I came up with ‘High Tide’ initially as a bit of a joke but it seemed to fit, so we decided to go with it.”
High Tide will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day but will otherwise be welcoming locals and visitors throughout the holiday period.
Bega Valley Shire Council completed upgrade works at Short Point in Merimbula last month to make the area accessible.
The new features include a new toilet amenities block with an accessible cubicle and outdoor showers, accessible picnic tables, a timber viewing deck and seating platform, accessible footpath linking the new amenities building to headland walk, new sun lounges, furniture and bins.
The works also included accessible parking bays, and a space for a future commercial food and beverage van which will be where High Tide is based.
Short Point was the third and final project under the Bega Valley Shire’s A Destination for All program.
The major funding partner in the Destination for All projects has been the NSW Government Restart program, with other funding for Short Point also being provided by NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, Surf Life Saving NSW, NSW Department of Primary Industries, and a Council contribution.
