The Jillaroos have secured their third Women’s World Cup title in style with a comprehensive 54-4 victory over New Zealand in Manchester on Sunday(AEDT).
With veteran halfback Ali Brigginshaw pulling the strings, Australia were far too good for their Trans-Tasman rivals, extending their winning streak to 16 consecutive international victories with a 10-tries-to-one triumph over the Kiwi Ferns, who have now lost three straight World Cup finals to the Jillaroos.
The win at Old Trafford means the Jillaroos join the Kiwi Ferns with both sides now holding three World Cup titles.
Co-Captain and Bega local, Kezie apps, recorded a team high 37 tackles and helped teammate Jessica Sergis cross the line at the 51 minute mark with an slick assist.
Despite an adductor strain Apps sustained earlier in the tournament that ruled her out of the Semi Final win over Papua New Guinea, she was solid in defence throughout the match.
In a press conference after the win, Apps said the women’s game is going from strength to strength, thanks to people like player of the match Ali Brigginshaw who has inspired girls across the country to play rugby league.
“It was really special and it was the 2013 World Cup, Ali was there, holding up the trophy which inspired me to play in women’s rugby league,” Apps said.
“From there to now, rugby league for women has just come on in leaps and bounds,” she continued.
“The investment that the NRL have put into it, and the performance that we put on today really reflects that.
“I can’t wait to see what the next three years, for the next World Cup – what can change between now and then.”
