Four charged over harness race fixing

Four people charged over alleged harness race fixing in country Victoria could be banned from the sport until their cases are heard.

Two men and two women, from Shepparton and NSW, have been charged with engaging in conduct that corrupts a betting outcome and other related offences.

The group was arrested in August last year after an investigation of the tactics adopted during the betting on and running of a race that was won by Airbournemagic at Cobram on June 22, 2015.

Two of those charged drove horses in the race, placing first and third.

Harness Racing Victoria issued a statement on Wednesday saying stewards would now decide whether to ban those charged from competing in future races and/or cancel their licences.

Those charged have until 5pm on January 19 to make submissions to HRV.

All four have all been summoned to appear at Shepparton Magistrates' Court on February 20.
