Bega’s famous clock tower will soon be ticking again.
Repair works to the Dr Evershed Memorial Clock are scheduled to take place from 7.00am to 4.00pm on January 23 and 24, with access from Carp Street into Gipps Street to be closed on those days.
Motorists will be able to access Club Bega, the Commercial Hotel bottle shop drive through, the Gipps Street carpark and other Gipps Street properties and businesses from Bega Street during the works period, while signs will be in place to inform road users and pedestrians.
The master clock system will be fully replaced, following a full custom build carried out by one of the few master clock builders in Australia.
A battery back-up system with a high frequency quartz controller for precision timekeeping will form part of the new clock, and after repairs it will automatically change for daylight saving time.
Many of the components have been built by hand, including the dial train which houses the gear box attached to the clock hands.
