Aussies battling to cope

Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:08

soup kitchen Today on the 2EC morning show i spoke to Major Peter Sutcliffe from the Salvation Army about disturbing new data highlighting the fact that Australia’s two speed economy doesn’t appear to be slowing down. The data from a recent survey suggests that 52% of people surveyed have gone without a meal and 29% cannot afford a meal once a day. 33% can’t afford heating and 37% can’t afford medication prescribed by their GP. As we mentioned in yesterdays blog we have people in our community who can’t afford the high rents and live in tents at holiday parks or worse in their car!! More alarming statistics suggest that 89% of people surveyed can’t afford a weeks annual holiday per year and 14% don’t have warm clothes or bedding for their families. So there is a snapshot of the issues confronting everyday Australians and we have politicians hell bent on introducing new taxes that will place even more pressure on everyday Australians, i think it’s time they stopped the nonsense and started dealing with the issues that we voted them in to fix. They can always be voted out!!

AFL Indigenous round

AFL Indigenous round

This weekend is the annual AFL indigenous round which sees a celebration of indigenous AFL players at all levels of the game. Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes has paid tribute to former St.Kilda champion Nicky Winmar who lifted his jumper and pointed to his black skin in the middle of Collingwood's home ground Victoria Park 20 years ago. The celebration of Windmar’s stand against racial abuse is the centrepiece of this weekend’s AFL indigenous round. This will begin tonight when the Sydney Swans take on Collingwood tonight at the MCG and will continue at every match over the weekend.... Read more

Should we scrap the family veto on organ donation?

Should we scrap the family veto on organ donation?

The question should we scrap the family veto on organ donation has been discussed over and over again over recent months and with Kidney health week happening next week perhaps it is something we should think about again. The focus has been for people who wish to nominate themselves as donors to discuss it with their families so when the unthinkable eventually happens the relatives are aware of our wishes. In 2012 just 17 more Australians donated their organs than in 2011. According to the Australian newspaper there were 1052 transplant recipients in 2012 from 354 donors which is... Read more

A Tathra Fundraiser

A Tathra Fundraiser

Tathra is the venue for a cancer council fundraiser this weekend. There will be market stalls, a prawn eating competition and a dog race with a difference. A good old fashion party is on the menu at the Tathra Pub this weekend and it’s all in aid of the Cancer Council. The inaugural Tathra Pub fundraiser is going to be a quirky family friendly event with a huge charity auction and a “Pink” party with the public being encouraged to dress up in something pink. Tathra Pub general manager Paul Berryman told me on the morning show today that... Read more
